ZORIAH

A burst of sunlight releases me from my nightmare, and Tristan’s wide, dead face vanishes into darkness. Hands seize my shoulders and roughly pull me upright. Another hand presses to my mouth, and my voice dies in the back of my throat. It takes my eyes a moment to acclimate and make sense of the figure leaning over me.

“Maya?”

“Quiet,” she whispers, “and follow quickly.”

I get to my feet and look around the dungeon. Maya’s youngest, Malia, sits on her hip. She smiles and offers me Mr. Lamb and babbles something about taking it. I smile back despite my confusion. Maya hands me the clothes I came here in; the ones Fenrik gave me when we left the Shadowlands’ den.

“What’s going on, Maya?” I hold on to the gray t-shirt, black jeans and boots, waiting for her reply.

“We’re leaving. All of us are.”

Two pairs of blue eyes peer through the trap door on the ceiling. Jacob and Tilly. Including the little one, she’s brought all three cubs here.

“Come on. We need to hurry.”

Maya turns and heads for the ladder. She climbs them and hands ten-year-old Tilly the baby, then she turns back and waits for me. I don’t know why she’s helping all of a sudden. I’ve been trapped in the Oubliette for three horrifying days and not once has she spoken to me when she brought my meals.

Although there’s a tinge of uncertainty that threatens to creep down my spine, I hurriedly pull my clothes on. I climb the ladders, accepting her help at the top, and then leave the Oubliette to rot in the ground without me. Out in the fresh air, Maya leads the way down a stone passageway that connects to a familiar tunnel. The one Shadow and I took to the portal.

“The portal won’t work,” I say, holding Jacob’s hand as we enter the lightless tunnel. “Not without the alpha’s pendant.”

“Do you mean this?” She holds the necklace up and the sun-shaped emerald dangles from the gold chain.

My heart skips a beat. “What about the others? Solas threatened to kill them if I left.”

“He was lying. He wouldn’t risk decreasing his numbers when he needs as many wolves as he can to protect him, especially when he’s vulnerable and unable to shift.”

That does make sense. So much so that I can’t believe I never realized that on my own. Fear can do that to you sometimes. It robs you of everything, and in the days I’ve spent under Solas’ captivity, I’ve never felt a fear quite like it.

We step into the part of the tunnel where the tree’s heart can be detected through the root-covered walls. The only source of light comes from Shadow who’s waiting at the bottom of it. He flicks his tail twice, a signal of some kind, that causes Tilly to race toward him.

“Why are you helping me, Maya?”

Adjusting Malia on her hip, she turns to face me, her eyes searching my own.

“I won’t ask for your forgiveness; I don’t deserve it. I will, however, explain why I haven’t done anything until now.
